Praça do Mitre is Santa’s address in Foz do Iguaçu

Christmas program at the Falls is on until December 23, laden with attractions.

Praça do Mitre, a square in downtown Foz do Iguaçu, houses the Christmas Village, a giant ecological tree, and many attractions. Christmas at the Waterfalls “is a family-oriented festival for locals from the Three Borders area and also for tourists visiting us. An event that gets our city in the Christmas spirit,” said Gilmar Piolla, Itaipu’s Social Communications superintendent and Fundo Iguaçu chairman.

The Christmas at the Waterfalls program will be on until December 23 at Praça do Mitre. Santa Claus will be talking with the kids every night from 8 pm to 11 pm. To get to the site, he is going to leave the 34th Mechanized Infantry Battalion (34°BIMec) in a sleigh pulled by an electric vehicle belonging to the Itaipu power plant and travel along the entire Avenida Brasil.

In addition to Santa Claus’ House, the Christmas Village holds kiosks that sell arts and crafts and food, a nativity scene, and the House of Toys, to which people can take toys that will be handed out to the city’s underprivileged children.

There will be an extensive artistic program at the site as well, always on Wednesdays to Sundays, featuring a wide variety of free concerts and shows – from classical to Brazilian country, from samba to Argentinean tango.

Christmas decorations are not restricted to Praça do Mitre, though. Porticos have been put up along Brasil and Jorge Schimmelpfeng avenues to represent the passage to a new year. On Avenida das Cataratas, tourists and locals will be greeted by 280 banners featuring happy holiday messages in several languages. Three giant banners can be now seen at the cloverleaf giving access to Argentina.

Christmas at the Waterfalls is sponsored by Itaipu Binacional, the Foz do Iguaçu city administration, Fundo Iguaçu, ICVB, Cataratas S/A, Fecomércio, Duty Free Shop, and Acifi.
